Shatavari

(Asparagus racemosus)

Galactogogue: The galactogogue activity of Shatavari stimulates the alveolar tissue and increases the secretory activity thereby restoring and improving milk yield.

Uterine-relaxant activity: A. racemosus roots were found to produce significant uterine muscle relaxation. The mechanisms involved were both calcium-dependent and -independent pathways. A. racemosus showed decreased spasmogenic-induced contraction and also increased uterine weight. The effects of this plant on the uterus have been shown to mimic that of oestrogen.

Adaptogenic activity: The plants show the property of adaptogen (enhance the ability of the body to change according to the environment) as mentioned earlier, it belongs to Rasayana herb thus improving cellular immunity as well.

Hepato-protective: A. racemosus powder was found to significantly reduce the elevated serum hepatic marker enzymes like AST, ALP and ALT. Also, it was found that the extract of A. racemosus attenuated the hepatotoxic effects caused by toxins in preclinical trials.

Neuroprotective: The extract of Shatavari helps to inhibit an enzyme responsible for the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. Racemosol and rhamnose present in A. racemosus has neuroprotective properties. Shatavari also has anti-oxidant effects and enhanced neuronal activity in the regions of the brain.

Anti-anaemic: A. racemosus significantly increased the number of red blood corpuscles (RBC) and haemoglobin percentage. In a preclinical study, it was found to decrease significantly the bleeding time and clotting time as compared to heparin.
